Parting is such sweet sorrow
I cut about 100 people from the ol' flist. Mostly because they hadn't posted in ages. Too much dead wood from the 2004 election cycle hanging around. :D

And speaking of parting, I'll be leaving, too. Though not forever! I'll be back next month after a couple of weeks in New England. (If a Kennedy "accidentally" falls into the ocean I had nothing to do with it!)

What's the cure for a slow economy?
Tax cuts!

Unfortunately the best place to cut them is in the upper middle class because the lower income quintiles have been largely removed from personal income taxation. Unfortunate because no one is going to run with the slogan "it's time to cut taxes on the upper middle class!". :/

That leaves the payroll taxes. It's time to call a duck a duck and admit that it's been a welfare program since at least the 1960s and thus we need to means test it on the receiving end and apply tax rate cuts on the giving end. In fact, I'd like to see the same (low) tax rates applied overall to fund the government. Let's stop kidding ourselves that a separate tax actually is held aside for a specific program.

Finally, we should be proactive about future benefits and allow people to "default" on them in return for lower tax rates today. That is, in return for forfeiting your "benefits" in 20 years you can get an immediate tax cut today. And you can use that money to fund a real retirement account that won't have a negative rate of return!

Unfortunately the current crop of politicians is too timid to enact such needed reforms. I guess there is only one thing to do.

Announce my candidacy!

John McCain's latest ads
I think McCain's latest ads have found a good catchphrase that will resonate with voters.

"Don't just hope for a better America; vote for one." (Or something like that.)

Too bad he's still running as a Democrat. :P

Countrywide's alllies in Congress take down a rival
Countrywide's problems are well known. Too many loans to too many people who really couldn't afford them.

Not so well known is the fact that Countrywide was giving sweetheart deals to members of Congress (wave hi, Kent Conrad and Chris Dodd!) as well as other highly placed officials (wave hi, former Fannie Mae CEO and (until then) Barack Obama advisor James Johnson!) all the while it was foisting adjustable rate mortgages unto families that thought they had found a free lunch.

Even less well known is how another Democrat, Chuck Schumer, took out a Countrywide rival with a single comment.

You see Chuck pronounced that IndyMac Bank, one of Countrywide's chief rivals, was not fiscally sound and his remark caused a run on the bank. As depositors withdrew billions of dollars the bank's ability to service its own loans collapsed.

Cue the FDIC which swooped in to pick up the pieces (at your expense, of course).

So we have a company giving special consideration to top Democrats who in return take out rivals to this company by causing a run on the bank and then lowering the boom of federal regulation and takeover. (Democrats will no doubt claim that this action is not only necessary, but more regulation and power is needed to stave off other collapses.)

Wow, how is that for a scandal that dwarfs anything from the Clinton-Enron-Adelphia-Tyco-MCI-Worldcom days? Those companies only took out themselves while showering Democrats with special consideration, money, and "a piece of the action".

Check your bank's board of directors. If they are not currently showering Democrats with campaign contributions it could be the next target of Mr. Schumer or his associates who will "express concern" about the financial stability of your bank.

The financial sector has enough problems without the Democrats acting like gangsters.

And a comment to anyone that cares: WHERE THE HELL IS THE BUSH JUSTICE DEPARTMENT? WHAT THE HELL HAVE THEY BEEN DOING? Keeping us "safe from porn", no doubt.

Is it too late to vote third party in 2004?

RIP: Tony Snow
I was saddened to hear the news of Tony's passing. He was a great journalist, commentator and Press Secretary for the Bush administration. It was great to see him calling the MSM on their bullshit during press conferences and briefings, especially after McClellan's milquetoast performances.

RIP Tony!

Phil Gramm speaks the truth
McCain disowns him.
Gramm attracted the attention when he told the Times: "You've heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession." He noted that growth has held up at about 1 percent despite all the publicity over losing jobs to India, China, illegal immigration, housing and credit problems and record oil prices. "We may have a recession; we haven't had one yet."

"We have sort of become a nation of whiners," Gramm said. "You just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in decline" despite a major export boom that is the primary reason that growth continues in the economy, he said.

If McCain doesn't want to run as a Republican why is he running as a Republican?

Heck, if he doesn't want to be a Republican why is he a Republican?

Gramm is correct about the current state of affairs. The MSM has been endlessly pimping the Democrat memes about the economy. That has driven many Americans to feel that we are actually in a recession instead of an economic slowdown.

Scare enough Americans and you will turn an economic slowdown into a real recession. That is, of course, the whole idea behind the Democrat propaganda. McCain should have taken the time to explain it and why the Democrats are wrong. Instead he has chosen to echo their meme and claim his response will be better than the Democrats.

McCain is going to learn the lesson of every other Republican who has tried to run as a Democrat-lite: when it comes to voters who have decided they want a Democrat, they vote for the real thing and not an imitation.

We will simply have to start calling it "Britain" from now on.
There's no longer anything "Great" about it.

From the continuing decline and fall of Once-Great Britain:

Kids disliking food is racist.

And

You now have to prove you are not a criminal.

Is there some sort of mass-dementia infecting the island?

This, of course, would end any Republican's political career
But because Jesse said it, it will be swept into the same memory hole that "hymietown" was.
CHICAGO - The Rev. Jesse Jackson apologized Wednesday for "regretfully crude" comments he made about Barack Obama's speeches in black churches, during what he thought was a private conversation.

Fox News broadcast Jackson’s remarks on "The O’Reilly Factor" Wednesday night. Jackson, speaking to Reid Tuckson, an executive vice president at United Health Group, as both men were about to be interviewed on "Fox & Friends" on Sunday, criticized Obama and said, "I wanna cut his n--- off."

"He's talking down to black people," Jackson told Tuckson.
